At the Dry Creek Joint Elementary School District (DCJESD) August 14, 2025 Board meeting, there was an attempt to introduce the anti-abortion video Baby Olivia into the curriculum outside of the standard review and adoption procedures. Following this, the Board directed the district to begin a formal curriculum development process for selecting an appropriate fetal development video.
The district is now evaluating five different fetal development videos, including Baby Olivia, through the established review process. Families will have a chance to preview all options and provide input during the public review window of December 1-19, 2025 in person at the district office or links can be found HERE online.

MANDARIN FESTIVAL STRAW POLL RESULTS IT'S A THING!
|
PlacerDems staffed a table at Mandarin Festival on the weekend of November 21. We encouraged everyone to pick a favorite. Many declined with a respectful, "I dunno." Although it's unscientific and unofficial, it's a snapshot showing where people are at.

The effort in this newsletter item is to offer connections that diverge from the traditional notion of the American Revolution and subsequent developments. They answer how cultural differences historically have been glossed over in order to form a "more perfect union." Ken Burns' documentary and the books cited below offer an alternative and realistic interpretation.
"Ken Burns's new documentary series, The American Revolution, is a six-part, 12-hour series that premiered on PBS in November 2025. It explores the American Revolution through the stories of various individuals, including Founding Fathers, Women, Native Americans, and Enslaved People, aiming to provide a more complete and nuanced understanding of this violent and complex period. The film is available to stream on PBS.org"
Editor's Note: As a supplemental reading, the Nation's Apart book (Read item below) provides an interesting framework of analysis for a deeper dive into the other developments of the American Revolution. It's not as rosy as many are led to believe. Another notion about modern day mythology of the American revolution (civil war) may be the description - misinformed patriotism for the sake of a one-nation paradigm, sacrificing its original multi-cultural foundation. Having said that, Nation's Apart is a history that connects subsequent eras of U.S. history.
After understanding how clashing regional cultures had an impact on politics from the very beginning, one can understand the racist partisan foundation for Nixon's Republican Southern Strategy, which subsequently morphed into the Tea Party, and was then magnified by MAGA Trumpism. In the book, We Are Indivisible (by Leah Greenberg, Ezra Levin, & 2 more) provides a concise history leading up to MAGA 2016/2024. Indivisible Clubs throughout the county offer hope in solutions to return democracy by use of accountability of elected officials by using rigorous constituency and representation tactics.

Author Colin Woodard is the Project Director for the Nationhood Lab. The work of the Nationhood Lab focuses on the authoritarian challenges facing Western democracies by drawing on data journalism, national narratives, and sound research.
|
Based at Salve Regina University's Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy, the Nationhood Lab is an interdisciplinary research, writing, testing and dissemination project focused on counteracting the authoritarian threat to American democracy and the centrifugal forces threatening the federation’s stability. The project delivers more effective tools with which to describe and defend the American liberal democratic tradition and better understand the forces undermining it.
|
Through an alternative lens, Woodard sheds light on the nation's political and social rifts—from the lead-up to the American Revolution to modern debates around federal authority, immigration, and the preservation of regional traditions. Understanding these entrenched cultural divisions, Woodard contends, is the key to comprehending America's tumultuous history and ongoing tensions.
