California is home to the most Afghans in U.S.
Nearly 200,000 Afghans arrived in the United States under former President Joe Biden, according to the U.S. State Department, first in a massive airlift as the American military pulled out of Afghanistan and then through programs to relocate people left behind who had worked with the U.S. government, their families and others particularly vulnerable to retribution from the Taliban.
President Donald Trump has withdrawn legal protections and erected new barriers to permanent status that threaten their future in their adopted home.

Recent Policy Proposals in the 2025 Federal Budget Reconciliation Law will have the following impacts: weaken the Reproductive Health Safety Net as more people become uninsured; reduce Medicaid and Affordable Care Act (ACA) Marketplace coverage; and ban federal Medicaid payments to Planned Parenthood clinics for one year.
