CalMatters - BY MIKHAIL ZINSHTEYN SEPTEMBER 2, 2025
IN SUMMARY - A 19th-century law called the Posse Comitatus Act defines what the military can do on U.S. soil. President Trump broke that law by sending the National Guard to L.A., a federal judge rules.
Trump’s deployment of the military to Los Angeles violated federal laws and his use of the armed forces must be heavily curtailed in California, a federal judge ruled today in a 52-page opinion that inveighed against the president’s belief that he has unchecked powers to send the military into U.S. cities.
“If the president is sincere about the issue of crime and violence, there’s no question in my mind that he’ll likely be sending the troops into Louisiana and Mississippi," Governor Newsom said.
The Supreme Court has already expanded President Donald Trump’s authority in a string of emergency rulings, but in his firing of Federal Reserve governor Lisa Cook and other issues probably headed to the court, he’s signaling that he continues to seek broader powers for the executive branch.
COMMENTARY - The president's recent executive orders on collective bargaining are a solution in search of a problem, and without a solid premise to stand on.

Corporate Union Busting in Plain Sight

How Amazon, Starbucks, and Trader Joe’s crushed dynamic grassroots worker organizing campaigns
Rebuilding worker power by strengthening unions is not just good policy—it is a democratic imperative in the face of authoritarian backsliding. In high-union-density states:
• median household income is higher on average • the share of people with no health insurance is lower • education spending per pupil is nearly 50% higher that of low-union density states
Unions don’t just improve workers’ paychecks—they shape the social and political fabric of the communities they operate in, lifting standards for union and nonunion workers alike. Read in-depth article: CORPORATE UNION BUSTING
