The grim reality of Gaza's hunger crisis appears to be shifting U.S. public opinion / NBC News
"House Democrats, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, of California, Brad Schneider of Illinois and Robert Menendez Jr. of New Jersey, have also ramped up their advocacy for sending more aid into Gaza. Pelosi, in a post on X on Sunday, called the situation a 'catastrophic moral emergency.'"
"Last night, by a vote of 27-17, Senate Democrats voted to stop sending arms shipments to a Netanyahu government which has waged a horrific, immoral and illegal war against the Palestinian people." - Sen. Bernie Sanders
The resolutions introduced by Sen. Sanders failed to receive a majority vote, but showed that Democrats are standing against the ongoing crisis in Gaza that many are calling a genocide.

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT SAFETY NET
|
First in a series of Safety Net items for the "In the Weeds"
by Robert Gonzalez, Communications Committee Member
Informing on these Federal Safety Net programs must start with defining the "Safety Net." The purposes of these programs include providing essential services to alleviate poverty and hardships during economic downturns in the US. Some programs include food assistance, childcare and development programs, healthcare, housing assistance, and unemployment insurance.
The major safety net programs started under Democrat President Franklin D. Roosevelt who fought for policy programs called the "New Deal." Some reported that the New Deal saved capitalism. Indeed, at the start of these New Deal Programs, they immediately relieved the extensive poverty of retired seniors and millions of unemployed families during the Depression. The 1930s caused widespread, severe economic hardships across the nation. The first two major programs were the Social Security Act and the Unemployment Insurance Act of 1935. Today, they continue their humanitarian legacy of keeping seniors out of poverty and assist families experiencing severe disruptions caused by economic or catastrophic hardships.
Today, there are twelve Safety Net Programs; the last program implemented was signed into law in 2010 by Democratic President Barack H. Obama.
Future editions will include more details on the programs. Until then, I will provide a quiz to test your knowledge of the acronyms or abbreviations of these programs: SSA, UI, HS, SNAP, Medicare/aid/(CAL), SSI, WIC, Pell, EITC, TANF, CHIP, and ACA.
Provide your replies to the quiz here: Safety Net Quiz replies
